"Pieta" first art piece done by Michelangelo at the age of 16. Answer 2: Michelangelo was born in 1475. Pietà was sculpted in 1495. Before that Michelangelo sculpted the reliefs Madonna of the Steps (1490-1492) and Battle of the Centaurs (1491-1492.)
Only Michelangelo could answer this question.
Several years ago I read an item that stated that Michelangelo was upset that no one knew he had done the work, so he went in at night and placed his name on her sash. I think this has a true ring to it.
It was not customary for artists at the time to sign their work. Michelangelo didn't sign his paintings.
However, he was so proud of his Pieta sculpture that he signed it. His signature is carved across the chest of the Virgin.
"The Pieta" (circa 1500) was the only sculpture signed by Michaelangelo.
