Mortimer Mouse prior to being renamed as Mickey Mouse .
Walt Disney originally invented Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, but, he did not get the patent for the cartoon, so another person got the patent and commercial rights to Oswald. Walt Disney and his patent Iwerks then came up with Mickey Mouse, and this time they got the patent and the commercial rights to their invention.
Walt Disney's first Cartoons were called Laugh-O'Grahms, but the First Character made by Walt Disney's company was Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Even though Disney's company created Oswald, Universal owned the copyrights and basically kicked Walt off the project he created because Walt wouldn't take a pay cut. That series of events led Walt himself to create a mouse cartoon based upon a pet he used to have while working in Kansas City. This mouse is who we now know as Mickey Mouse. The Walt Disney Company just bought back the rights of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit from NBC Universal in 2006, 77 years after it was taken from Walt.
Walt Disney was on a train from Manhattan to Hollywood at the time and mickey mouse popped in to his head while Disney was drawing mickey he thought of a rabbit that he could create as well he then created a rabbit that was soon named by Disney as Oswald The Lucky Rabbit
Oswald the lucky rabbit was forgotten because he came before mickey mouse and Walt Disney was not allowed to make Oswald cartoons any more because universal and Charles mintz took Oswald away.
