Actually this is probably an exaggeration; there are hadiths from his later life that show him reading at least at a basic level.
However, he certainly could not read Hebrew. He probably could not even read well enough to read an Arabic translation of the Tanakh.
He certainly spoke an acted like a person who had not a clue what the Tanakh really said, or how the bits of it that other people had told him all fitted together in a coherent whole.

Sure, he didn't read the Old Testament or any other writings because the prophet (peace be upon him) was illiterate. There are many events that prove he was illiterate.
Moses led the Hebrews out of Egypt. you can read about it in the book of Exodus in the old testament it is a very interesting story, one of the most interesting i have ever read.
