Napoleon invaded Russia in 1812, won several battles, seized Moscow but failed to convince the Tsar to conclude the peace.

He decided to retreat in Autumn before of being blocked by the terrible Russian winter, and in so doing he lost his army, of which only about 20,000 men crossed again the river Elbe .
