Yes, he was sentenced to death, but it was commuted to life without parole. Some say the overturn was because Clark's prior kidnapping/rape of another young girl tainted the jury, but the details of that case had been well disseminated by local press before Clark saw his first day in court regarding Doll, so everyone in the Puget Sound knew about it. The actual reason for the overturn: an appeal was filed by Clark's attorney, Richard Jacquette: he claimed that Clark was 'unreasonably restrained' during his trial. This meant that jurors were able to see that he was restrained with chains because the table he was sitting at blocked the view of said chains. Unfortunately, the complaint was accepted. I'd've just as soon seen him executed, but he will endure a lifetime of being beaten up in jail for what he did.
