Why did the first group from Roanoke give up and leave?

I'm not sure what you mean by "from roanoke', but here's a very short overview of the three groups that traveled to Roanoke Island. The 1584 group was a reconnaissance trip to find a suitable location for the establishment of a military bastion in the New World. It was not intended to be a permanent settlement. The second group, in 1585, consisting of 108 men, were to establish a military settlement on Roanoke Island. Deteriorating relation with the natives and a severe shortage of food and supplies created hardships for the fledgling settlement. The third group, consisting of approximately 120 men, women and boys, left England in May of 1587 intending to plant a permanent settlement on the Chesapeake Bay. They were dropped off at Roanoke Island. Their fate is a mystery and there were probably many reasons why they decided to leave the island. No definitive information is available, just theories.

What was England's first attempt at colonizing Roanoke?

In 1584 Sir Walter Ralegh and his investors sent two barks under the command of Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe to discover a suitable place for establishing a military basion in the New World. The company consisted of men only and was not intended to be a permanent settlement, rather, it was a reconnaissance voyage. In 1585 Ralegh and his backers sent a colony of 108 men to establish a military settlement on Roanoke Island. In 1587 a group of approximately 120 men, women and boys traveled to the New World to establish a perment settlment. They were supposed to go to the Chesapeake Bay but were dropped off at Roanoke Island. Ralegh's interest in this voyage was not nearly so intense as his interests in the two earlier voyages. While he certainly assisted in the organization, definitely used his influence to facilitate matters there is no evidence that he expected any financial profit from the venture.

When did colonism begin?

In 1584 and 1585 two expeditions were sent to Roanoke Island, in what is now North Carolina. They were of a military nature, sponsored and organized by Sir Walter Ralegh. In 1587 another expedition was sent and they too landed at Roanoke Island although they were supposed to go to the Chesapeake. This voyage consisted of men, women and boys. The colonists were unsuccessful and disappeared. Their fate is unknown. In 1607, during the reign of King James, another colony was sent to Virginia and the Jamestown colony was established. This was the first permanent and ultimately successful settlement in what is now the USA. I am sure my learned colleagues will supply information concerning colonization attempts in other countries.

What is the explanation of the name lost colony?

The name refers to the colony of men, women and boys who traveled to Roanoke Island (in what is now North Carolina) in 1587. Their governor, John White, returned to England in August of 1587 to secure more supplies for the struggling colony. When he returned to Roanoke Island in 1590 there was no trace of the colonists. They had abandoned the settlement and were never heard of or from again. Thus they became known as "the lost colony." This is a brief and true report, with the emphasis on 'brief'.
