The Savage 99 was a lever action, centerfire rifle. When it was first introduced, it was ahead of it's time. It was arguably a better rifle than the Winchester 94 of the same era, but it didn't seem to catch on as well. I believe they quit making it in the 50's, and reintroduced it for a while in the late 70's or early 80's, but again it didn't fire the shooting public's imagination. The only current model that Savage shows in the current catalog that has a rifle and a shotgun barrel is the Model 24-F. Nothing is shown in .17 caliber, but they have 22. long rifle, .22 magnum and .22 Hornet available, depending on whether you want a 12 or a 20 gauge shotgun barrel. Since the .17 is only a year old or so, I think it's safe to say it was never used in the 99 lever action, which was only made in centerfire calibers. And, the 24-F as of yet is not chambered for the .17. Check for yourself at http://www.savagearms.com/centerfire_home.htm under "Specialty Series."
I think the question refers to barrel length -- eg 17.5 inches -- unfortunately I don't know but I doubt it -- I bet the barrel has been trimmed -- remember that it's still legal as long as it's over 16 inches.

serial number suggests that your rifle was produced in the middle of 1903, about the time the Springfield 03 was taking the field. 1903 was the first year that the Krag rifles were only produced as carbines. Rifles ended in 1902. From the serial number, it appears this is what you have: an m1898 carbine produced in the middle of 1903. As a note, this is near the end oof complete production for the Krag, as production ended in 1904.
