Did Simpson's donkey die in the war?

No. After Simpson's death, the donkey was taken over by New Zealand primary school teacher Richard Henderson, and Simpson's role was carried on by Henderson. When the ANZACs were evacuated under cover of darkness 8 months later, the donkey went too, and eventually found a happy home.
