The primary reason that Spain abolished the slave trade is that the colonies that it would have brought those slaves to had become independent countries. Additionally, the earlier British abolition of slavery led the British to patrol the Atlantic and free slaves en route to the Americas and the British Navy was much stronger than the Spanish fleet by the mid 1800s.
