Alaska is not landlocked. Alaska has huge amounts of shoreline bordering the ocean. In fact, Alaska extends hundreds of miles down the coast in areas that look like they should belong to Canada. Alaska may be separated from the USA by Canada, but it's not "landlocked." That's the wrong term. Now as to WHY the USA decided to buy Alaska from Russia back in the late 1860s, that has to do with minerals and natural resources. We didn't buy it intending to make it a state. It was nearly 100 years later before Alaska and Hawaii were made states. You might ask, why didn't Canada buy it? Well, we wanted it more. We were willing to pay more. And maybe the Russians wanted to be more friendly to us than to the Canadians / Great Britain for political reasons.
