Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Gray raced to invent the telephone.

In the 1870s, two inventors Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham Bell both independently designed devices that could transmit speech electrically (the telephone). Both men rushed their respective designs to the patent office within hours of each other, Alexander Graham Bell patented his telephone first. Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham Bell entered into a famous legal battle over the invention of the telephone, which Bell won.

He didn't invent the telephone, he stole the patent for it and claimed it for himself

Accusations that Bell stole the ideas of Elisha Grey were repeatedly rejected by courts in the late 1800s. They are based entirely on testimony, always rejected as perjury, that Bell had been given ideas that Bell then added to his patent application. The latter shows no signs of being altered.

Bell's patent application includes ideas that never appeared in Grey's caveat, and the working model Bell submitted to the patent office is designed like Bell's ideas, not Grey's. Very soon after beginning his business, Bell's phones stopped using Grey's ideas for a liquid transmitter, and it has never been used since.

Grey may well have been the first to develop an idea that COULD have been used for a phone, or he may not have. But the absolute evidence that Bell stole the ideas is utterly lacking.
