Yes! Polo shirts were popular for little boys as early as 1929, and as normal street wear rather than sports wear. I can't find any reference to when little girls started wearing them, but in the early 20th century clothing was very gender differentiated for children and though polo shirts became common sportswear for adult women I don't imagine little girls wore them as much.
During World War 2 many kids were evacuated from major cities to the countryside to escape the Blitz. Polo shirts are not found amongst the UK government's recommended list of clothes for them to take, but being durable, hard wearing, comfortable, cheap to make and sell, and going with almost anything, I imagine polo shirts would have been very popular clothes to dress evacuees in! I also believe that evacuee girls were the first little girls to start wearing polo shirts like boys did, as well. During world war two fashion for kids became more unisex (girls started to wear shorts, for example, which up until then had been the hallmark of a little boy.) This was partly due to the practicalities of evacuation, partly due to the "home front" movement in which women and children had to work and help the war effort at home (many of whom wore male clothes.)
Today the chances are if you know a child he or she has a few polo shirts in his or her wardrobe - they're comfortable, cute and go with anything, as well as being durable, hard-wearing and perfect for a kid. They're uniform for many primary schools, secondary schools, gym uniforms, in the UK cubs and brownies, some kids clubs, sports clubs, even kids' jobs like paper-rounds... I think they owe their trademark kid polo shirts mainly to the evacuees!

Where I'm from, it's usually boys who wear polo shirts, and they tend to have three buttons. But girls can wear them too! In my opinion it looks a little tomboyish and very cute when they do. :3
Classic Polo make different types of clothes but a substantial part of the selection are sleeveless shirts. Those are best to wear during summer time. Most of their casual trousers and regular shirts also are more aimed toward summer but will work decently during spring and autumn too.
