Which helicopter pilots?
From what i see,they only seem to carry a sword.
LAPD officers are authorized to carry Smith and Wesson, GLOCK, and Beretta semi auto pistols, in 9mm,.40 caliber and .45 caliber as duty weapons. They may additionally carry compact versions of the above brands for back up weapons ,or as off duty weapons. Some veteran officers still carry department authorized S&W revolvers in.38 caliber( although Dept. policy has required transition to the above pistols in semi auto) Officers may still carry the compact S&W snub nose revolver in .38 caliber as a back up or off duty weapon. Currently officers who have completed a transitional course, or are recent academy graduates, are issued the GLOCK model 22,in .40 Caliber. Additionally, Officers of the City of Los Angeles Airport and Port Police Depts, are authorized to carry Sig Sauer semi auto pistols in 9mm,.40 caliber, and .45 caliber in addition to the above authorized manufacturers listed for LAPD

Minors can't purchase air pistols but they can use them. I wouldn't carry them around in public though.
I don't know when yours was made, but I bought mine, serial # B17548 in 1969. It still shoot good and is one of my "carry" pistols.

The Chicago police website stats there are 13,000 sworn men and women but does not specify that they are all police who carry a gun and a badge. This may include the helicopter pilots and crime lab people too
