Yes, Jimmy Stewart bought a surplus P-51 in the late 1940's . I believe he raced it in some of the Bendix Trophy races and set some records in the late 40's and early 50's. He had a very distinguished career in aviation having been an operational bomber pilot in WW2 and later flew a B-52 in early days of Vietnam.
