No, not at all. He didn't have any part of writing it. It was co-written by June Carter and Merle Kilgore. in fact, Cash didn't even record it right away. He gave about six months for June's sister, Anita, to try to make a hit out of the song. When she failed to get a hit single, he sang it his way, with the mariachi trumpets.
