The Mongols, led by Kublai Khan, attempted to invade Japan in 1274 and again in 1281, but both attempts failed due to strong resistance from the Japanese and typhoons that destroyed much of the Mongolian fleet. Consequently, Japan maintained its independence and was not incorporated into the Mongol Empire.
