I don't think there is a perfect definition for it. I would say that it started in 410 AD and lasted a 1000 years with the fall of Rome. That people resorted to feudalism to stay alive and that the Church was the government and the religion teaching people they were born of sin and to go to heaven they had to repent their sins through the church teachings.
