They tried to stay upright, but I suppose at some point he may have gone down on his knee-- I know a later astronaut did. I don't know if he did or didn't, and doubt that he did, but I can not say for sure.
A later astronaut actually fell backwards onto his (life support) backpack. Fortunately, it kept on working just fine.
