He overthrew Charles I
Presumably Oliver Cromwell with a 'w' is meant. He was a Puritan, a form of 17th century extremist Protestant who believed in banning Christmas, the theatre and general frivolous entertainments. He chose his official title not as King (succeeding as he did Charles I, whom he had beheaded and was therefore accountable for regicide), but as 'Lord Protector of the Commonwealth' to reflect this, from 1649 to when he died in 1658. He was briefly succeeded by his son Richard, who was not so keen to rule and who stepped down in 1659 allowing for the 'Restoration' under Charles II in 1660.
