Sometimes public school board candidates who openly promote a Christian agenda get elected. Then they can help set policy and curriculum. There is often political pressure to alter say, Biology books, and health education.
There was a case in Alabama (from Mother Jones magazine) where teachers, students, and the principal of a public school pressured Jewish children to convert. This was unconstitutional but the teachers, students, and principal were genuinely concerned about the students' souls. The family won in court but became social pariahs because of this incident.
