The hawks found in Georgia in the US are: Red-tailed Hawks, Red Shouldered Hawks, Cooper's Hawks, Sharp-shinned Hawks, Broad Wing Hawks, harrier (in winter). Also, peregrine falcon, kestrel, and merlin are found there to some degree.
The red tailed hawk is the most common species in North America, and estimated numbers are over one and a half million birds. The red tail occurs in various habitats, with three distinct races, the common red tail, found over most of the eastern two thirds of the country, Krider's red tail, a pale race found on the plains, and Harlan's red tail, of Alaska and the Canadian Northwest. This race is dark in color, and may be considered a separate species after more research is done.
Adult red-tailed hawks are large formidable birds, and have few predators. Most predation on this species occurs to eggs and nestlings. Great horned owls are known predators of red-tailed hawk nestlings. Corvids are known predators of eggs and nestlings. (Preston and Beane, 1993)
Redtailed Hawks are no longer on the endangered list, but they are still protected by the Migratory Bird Act. They've made quite a comeback over the past few years and you can see them sitting on top of telephone poles, billboards, fence posts, and in trees while driving in rural areas. In fact, there are quite a large number of urban hawks now, which is good for bird lovers, but sad because it comes from us developing their natural habitat. The red tailed hawk has always been a common species, and has never been on the endangered species list.
War hawks are belligerent.
War Hawks were typically from the South and West.
The Red-tailed Hawk ranges throughout North America to the central Alaska and northern Canada, and south as far as the mountains of Panama. Although not truly migratory, they do adjust seasonally to areas of the most abundant prey. In winter many of the northern birds move south. http://www.desertusa.com/aug96/du_hawk.html
Resent studies say that there are about 30 million white tailed deer in the US.
Yes,Often Native Americans have the ability to read and understand animals and how they can help us to avoid dangers and pitfalls. To see a hawk as i did just this morning as it flew off a fence post i immediately slowed down to heed the hawks warning, as i rounded a curve 2 cows were in the middle of the road as i had not slowed down when i seen the hawk i would have run them over. To see crows flying is a sign of a clear road ahead. We are all connected on this planet and each one of us to take the time and understand what our animal friends are telling us completes the circle.
