He turned to the good side when he found out that the prophecy he overheard and told Voldemort about would mean that the one person he had ever loved ( Lily Potter Nee Evans ) was in danger. He then told Dumbledore and in exchange for their protection took a teaching place a Hogwarts. He told Voldemort that he was still a death eater and that the position would be useful to spy upon Dumbledore. Snape only told Voldemort what Dumbledore told him to tell which was rather a lot.
