Whenever they could get it they did. One of the standard Army rations, the D-ration, contained an extremely hard, bitter chocolate bar. Soldiers would shave pieces off this with their bayonet and try to make cocoa. Children in liberated countries, who had never seen chocolate, liked these bitter bars though.
