He wrote piano music, solo (with piano accompaniment) pieces for violin and cello. He wrote pieces with orchestral accompaniment for piano, violin, and cello. He wrote chamber music for string quartet and for piano trio (piano, violin and cello). Most of his music is orchestral and operas.
Tchaikovsky played the piano, and could play all of his own piano music and many pieces by other composers. His favorite composer was Mozart.
Tchaikovsky played piano, which was one of the prerequisites to studying music at the Moscow Conservatory. Most theory students even today are required to learn piano.
