Prior to 1970 the U.S. Army Transport Service and U.S. Military Sea Transportation Service existed, which both employed licensed and certified merchant seaman as their mates, engineers and unlicensed sailors in all departments.
In the early 50's the ATS merged with MSTS, and in 1970 MSTS became what is today the Military Sealift Command (MSC) which is made up of merchant seamen and merchant marine officers.

The Marines are part of the Navy. Originally they were solders who fought on ships, hence the name Marines. When pirates would try to take over a ship, Marines would fight against them. Later Marines were also used for land battles.
Individual Marines, or the Corps as a whole? The Marine Corps is extremely stingy with its medals. Things that in the Army will get you an Army Commendation Medal won't get you any medals at all in the Marines. The Marines also don't have a lot of the service ribbons the Army has.
