It depends...
Some people say that it was a complete disaster, as many lives were lost, mainly because of the poor leadership of Douglas Haig.
But some people would say that although many people died, that is just a natural part of a battle, and that because of this, people learnt a lot more about how to fight a battle more successfully.

The Battle of Britain was fought between Britain and Germany. It was an aerial battle fought by the British RAF and the German Luftwaffe. Though out-planed, out-trained, and out- numbered, the RAF managed to win the Battle of Britain using radar and planes that were faster and had maneuverable than the Luftwaffe.
Churchill said in his memoirs, that before the Battle of El Alamein Britain hadn't won a battle and after El Alamein Britain hadn't lost a battle.

During the First World War, which lasted from the 28th July 1914 to 11th November 1918, the Battle of the Somme became notorious for the slaughter inflicted on opposing forces between 1st Jul 1916 – 18th Nov 1916. It was fought by the armies of the British and French against the German forces. More than three million men fought in this battle and one million men were wounded or killed. It went down in history as one of the bloodiest battle of all time - it was simply a slaughter of a generation of young men on both sides.

It was the job of Field Marshall Hague to stop release the constant pressure of the french from the Germans at Verdun. Verdun was a very important place because of it's geographical position. By attacking at the Somme the GGermans moved up the line to the Somme which relieved the pressure at Verdun. So as Hague relieved the pressure off the french at Verdun, he had completed his mission objective. Despite the heavy casualties, he was doing his job. I personally think that it was terrible, and he wasn't very clever though....
