Prior to European influence the Cherokee kept domestic dogs as a source of food and as pack animals. Later the kept many domestic animals including hogs, chickens, cattle and other domestic European introduced livestock. Around 1720 the Cherokee began keeping horses and supplied many early Americans with horses through horse trading.
