My mom whoe was born in 1901 had to go into a "poor house" when her grandnother died.

Grandmother had relatives that where "well off": but their society frowned on poor people. There was no Soc. Sec. Nothing you could do , if your parents are poor you must work at 12 yrs or younger to give money to their parents.

Today it is not like that, but there is a "deep seated" prejudice if one is poor.
