They did both as they were very wishy washy at that time. This is why it appears The Bible contradicts itself.
According to Matthew, he was without honor in Galilee; according to John, he went to Galilee because he was without honor in Judea. According to Matthew the Galileans rejected him; according to John "the Galileans received him." According to Matthew, Galilee was "his own country"; according to John, Judea was "his own country." Matthew: "And when he came into his own country [Galilee], he taught them in their synagogue,...and they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honor, save in his own country" (13, 54-57). John: "He departed thence, the had come from Judea and Samaria] and went into Galilee. For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honor in his own country. Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galileans received him" (4, 43-45).
The Galileans welcomed Jesus because they were drawn to his teachings, miracles, and message of hope and salvation. Many saw him as a potential leader who could bring about positive change in their community and were inspired by his compassion and love for all people.

Although it is not written from whom Jesus received the cross, it is written that a man called Simon from Cyrene was compelled to carry Jesus' cross just after they came out from the judgement hall, (Matthew 27.32)
Jesus did not have a blood relation to Matthew. They were both Jewish, that's it.
Matthew gives the geology of Jesus christ in the beginning.
St. Matthew turned to Jesus because he was called by Jesus to follow him. Matthew, also known as Levi, was a tax collector before encountering Jesus. When Jesus called him, Matthew immediately left his profession and followed Him, acknowledging Jesus' authority and responding to His invitation to discipleship.
