What happend at Stalingrad in Russia?

The Germans had been advancing into Russia virtually without pause since the invasion in the summer of 1941. By the winter of 1942 the advance had run its course and the Russians had absorbed all the attacking force, while incurring massive casualties. General von Paulus, commanding the 6th Army, was to take the city of Stalingrad while armoured forces continued south to secure the Caspian oil fields. The Russian counter attack enveloped the Germans in the snow. The fighting was bitter, the resupply of the surrounded Germans by the Luftwaffe wholly inadequate. Manstein tried unsuccessfully to relieve 6th army. The promotion to Field Marshal of von Paulus was of no value in the effort to survive. Of those captured few would see Germany ever again. The Germans would continue to besiege Leningrad & they never got to Moscow: Stalingrad, like no other, would be the turning point in WW2. Once the Russians began to move west, towards Berlin, their advance, though measured, was relentless and unstoppable.
