The Netherlands were neutral prior to WWII and so did not have a very big army on dutch soil. Germany invaded in 1940 and until 1944 the Netherlands were under German occupation, of which some Dutch resisted.
The Netherlands was one of the countries that made up the Allies of World War II. They fought just as any other occupied country. After Germany occupied the Netherlands, there were some Dutch collaborators, but for the most part, the Germans had to contend with Dutch resistance fighters.
They hoped they could remain independent as in WW. When the Nazi's invaded it in 1940, the queen and the government fled to England, there encouraging people via speeches via the radio.
As the Germans seized the radios, many people secretly kept a 2nd radio somewhere. During the occupation, a resistance movement developed that did things such as assassinating SS members, stealing an forging food coupons for people who hid others looked for by the Germans (Jews, people who would otherwise be forced to work in Gemany etc.).
But there were also people who remained passive, or people who collaborated with the Germans. There were people who made lots of money by selling materials and services to the Nazi's, and people who betrayed others that hid people.
They were defeat by Germany in May 1940. Dutch resistance was overwhelmed by superior German forces and weaponry. It only took a few days to force the Dutch to surrender. There did develop and effective resistance organization against the occupation. Many resistance leaders were found by the Gestapo and were sent to concentration camps or where murdered outright. The most famous Dutch citizen to be murdered by the Nazis was Ann Frank. The winter of 1944/45 was especially harsh for the Dutch. Thousands of people were already malnourished and died of starvation. The Germans had implemented a tight blockade towards the end of the war that so inhuman and unnecessary since the war was almost over. In order to stop advancing British armies, the Germans deliberately flooded the entire country which brought additional misery to the people. The commander of German forces in Holland, Artur Seyss-Inquart, was indicted as a war criminal at the Nuremberg Trials and hanged in 1946. There were several thousand Dutch that were indoctrinated into the Nazi ideolotry and joined the Waffen SS and fought primarily on the eastern front. Most were killed in combat including the Battle for Berlin in 1945. On other event that's worth notating, was the German aerial bombing of the port city of Rotterdam in 1940 that significantly damaged this vibrant city. Fortunately, Amsterdam was spared by the Luftwaffe and Hitler.
