Amsterdam is and has been the Capital of the Netherlands since 1588. Despite being the capital, it is not the seat of government. That title goes to the city known as Den Haag or The Hague (in English). Only once in history has Amsterdam been both the capital and the seat of government and that was between 1808 and 1810 when King Louis Napoleon resided in the Amsterdam and declared it the seat of government and capital of his kingdom.
