Well, not all the time. Would you drink coffee all the time? The Romans had a wide selection of beverages besides their various types of wines. A useful army favorite was called posca. This was a mixture of vinegar and water. It served to not only quench the thirst, but the vinegar would kill off any bacteria that may be living in the water. This was the drink that the Roman soldier offered to Jesus when he was on the cross.

What would Jesus drink?

While Jesus was on the cross, he stated that he was thirsty. There was a jar of wine vinegar there so one of the guards soaked some on a sponge and gave it to Jesus to drink. There may not have been anything else to drink there or, since the Roman guards were very cruel, they just wanted Jesus to suffer more. What the significance of the wine vinegar is I don't know. All four of the Gospels mention this act. Matthew 27:48 Mark 15:36 Luke 23:36 John 19:29 Since the passage in John says that there was a jar of wine vinegar there, I assume that it was used for those on the cross as depicted.

What food did poor ancient Romans eat?

Poor Romans usually ate food that they were able to grow like onions. The poorest of the Romans would eat porridge and bread for morning breakfast. If the family had enough money they would probably buy wine and vegetables for a midday meal their last meal of the day would be anything they could find of the remaining from yesterday or even last week. This is all true but poor Romans also ate soup. Poor Romans did not drink wine or eat veggies. All they could afford was soup and bread and porridge sometimes.
