The Sunnis and Shiites were factions of Muslims that divided into separate sects. They are both considered to be Muslims. Neither of them "took over the Muslims."
If you are asking which group gained political power first, the answer would be the Sunnis.
Sunnis and Shiites.
The death of Muhammad split the Muslims over their belief about who should take over as their leader. The Sunnis believed that the person should be elected and the Shiites believed that the person should be a descendant of Muhammad.
What caused the split was Muhammad's death in 632.
In different places, yes. And they fight each other for more power. They have been fighting such the death of Muhammad, peace be upon Him.
Only Sunnis agreed on Abu Bakr as first Caliph after prophet Muhammad death. The Shiites believed that the Caliph should from the prophet family and accordingly they supported Ali to be the first caliph and not Abu Bakr. However, the Shiites accepted the majority selection of Abu Bakr and supported him and Ali (God pleased with him) was a closeadviser to Abu Bakr. See for more information the related question below

Shittes and Sunnis
All the Muslims agreed that it was not necessary to be the direct descendant of the Prophet (SAW) to qualify as the leader of the Muslims. The Prophet (SAW) had no son. The Muslims agreed on the Caliphate of Hazrat Abu Bakr (RAU), Hazrat Umar (RAU) and then Hazrat Usman (RAU). It was long after the death of the Prophet (SAW) that this idea was planted and their arose a split among the Muslims.
After the death of Hazrat Muhammad(SAW) Muslims began to argue about who should be the next leader of Muslims, some of those who favored hazrat ali were called shias and those who favored hazrat abu bakar and hazrat umer were called sunnis vut all three of them became khalifa one by one in the end. The unfortunate incident of the merciless martyrdom of the grandson of the holy Prophet (MPBUH) along with the members of his family at Karbala caused the split in the Muslims - Shiites and Sunnies, though the incident was equally condemnable for all the Muslim Ummah. It is equally regarded shameful and hateful by the Sunnies. No Muslim justifies it. They have the same regard and love for the Ahli-Bait as anybody else may claim.
It won't stabiliz until the Sunnis and the Shiites can come to some sort of an understanding.
