∙ 7y agoThe Union tended to name battles after nearby bodies of water or other natural landmarks; the Confederacy tended to name them after the nearest town or other man-made landmark. So the Battle of Bull Run is also referred to as the Battle of Manassas.
Further complicating this is that there were two battles ("First/Second Battle of Bull Run", or "Battle of First/Second Manassas") fought in this area. However, both of them ended in a Union retreat (the first in a rout; the second in a more orderly withdrawal), so the Confederate forces won both of them.
