It was first performed by the band "The Top Notes", then later by the "Isley Brothers" before it was covered by the "Beatles", an later by the "Mamas and Papas"

The Beatles cover is the best known version of the song, but the did not write it.

It was the last track they recorded on the album. John knew that it needed to sound crazy and rough like that, so he saved it to do until the end, so his voice was already destroyed from the rest of the album. :)
