In one of Aesop's Fables, the camel first asked if it could put its nose inside to avoid the blowing sand, then its eyes and ears, then its neck. Eventually the whole camel was in the tent and there was no room for the Arab.
The moral is that difficulties DON'T arise all at once, but are the consequences of bad choices which don't seem significant taken one by one.
