Both. If they lived in an area with enough people they went to school in the morning and helped their mother or father at home. Children as young as two years old helped by feeding the chickens. There was a lot of work to be done. Laundry took 3 days to do, churning butter, carried water and wood in, helping with farm animals and younger children, sewing and mending, mending fences, chopping wood, and other things.
