Hitler tried to divide the two because he could tell that there was an unnatural alliance between the democracies and the communist state of the Soviet Union. He did not trust America and therefore resorted to spying on his own ally. After the bombs were dropped on Japan, the Soviet Union needed to feel that they were equal to America in terms of military strength and weaponry.
