President Truman dropped two atomic bombs, the first ever created, on Hiroshima and Nagasaki because he thought that would be a good strategy to make the ever fighting Japan surrender in WW2

The development of the Atom Bomb created that need. They were first used to end World War 2, and the arms race to build bigger and better continued long afterwards.
The main question of debate on the subject of the atomic bomb is whether the attack was necessary. The US already had the Japanese cornered and would have forced a surrender with many fewer civilian deaths.

The United States dropped an atom bomb on Hiroshima, a major Japanese city. This did not result in surrender. So the United States dropped a second atom bomb on Nagasaki, another major Japanese city. This was finally enough to force the Japanese into surrendering.
