from 1948 through 1952 there were 2 size motors a 61 cu. and a 74 cu . from 53 on i believe they were all 74 cu
The panhead design for Harley Davidson started in 1948. It replaced the engine by Knucklehead. In 1965, it was replaced by what is known as a shovelhead.

The first Harley Davidson panhead engine was introduced in 1948 as part of the Harley-Davidson EL motorcycle model. It featured a new design with aluminum cylinder heads that resembled an upside-down pan, hence the nickname "panhead."

The top end of the engine, the part that houses the valves, spark plugs, etc. is called the heads. Harley Davidson designed the outside of their heads resembling a pan, a shovel or a knuckle , so Harley riders nicknamed them accordingly.
