Battleships had an armored belt along the waterline. It was intended to stop shells that hit their sides and to prevent flooding by underwater explosions due to near misses. World War II battleships had lighter upper armored belts to protect sides up to the main or weather deck. Main belt thickness along the waterline ranged from 10" to 15", upper belt thickness ranged from 4" to 10".

The M26 Pershing tank had armor 102 mm thick on the front of the hull, and 76 mm thick on the sides of the hull. The turret was protected by 102 mm of armor (the same as the hull), while the mantlet (gun shield) for the 90 mm main gun was up to 114 mm thick. The M26 Pershing was one of the only Allied tanks during WWII with thick enough armor to take a direct hit from the German 8.8 cm anti-tank gun and survive.

Italy was in the Triple Allince but then switched to fight with Russia, Britain and France and dont forget the U.S.
During World War I, no countries actively supported both sides of the conflict at any time; that is, no country switched sides at some point during the war. While Italy began the war as a "paper ally" of the Central Powers, it did not actively contribute military assistance of any kind to their cause. In 1915, it became a combatant on the side of the Triple Alliance.

The James C. Owens was part of the Sumner class of destroyers. They were designed to be an improvement on the Fletcher class. Since the Fletcher class had 0.75" side armor and 0.5" deck armor, it is to be assumed that the Sumner class destroyers, like the James C. Owens did have side and deck armor.
