$125.00 per week was paid to a six-year-old Cairn Terrier ka Terry [1933-1944]. With the guidance of owner/trainer Carl Spitz [August 26, 1894-September 15, 1976], she got an early start to an acting career that landed her roles in a total of 13 films. Her first acting job was in 1934, with Ready for Love. She next appeared, as Rags, opposite Shirley Jane Temple [b. April 23, 1928] in Bright Eyes. During the filming of The Wizard of Oz, one of the Wicked Witch of the West's guards stepped on her. She broke an ankle, and temporarily was replaced by another dog during her recuperation. With filming completed, in 1939, she accompanied the rest of the cast to the premiere at Grauman's Chinese Theater. Three years later, and what with the continued widespread acclaim of the film, she went through a name change, to Toto. She was buried in a pet burial area behind her owner/trainer's residence and kennel. The property subsequently was purchased, and everything razed, with the Ventura Freeway expansion in Los Angeles.
