The Federalist Party was so named because of their support of the Federal Constitution. Some members of the Federalist Party were the authors of the Federalist Papers, a series of pamphlets meant to argue for the ratification of the Constitution.

In the 1790's Alexander Hamilton and the Federalist Party favored a strong centralized federal government and wanted the individual states to ratify the constitution, even though it meant the states had to give up some of their powers to the federal government.
The Federalist party grew out of Hamilton's view of a strong federal government.
The main disagreement was the issue of a strong federal government, supported by Federalists, or a weak federal government with strong state government or rights, which was supported by anti-federalists, hence the name. But more importantly, while Anti-Federalists strongly disagreed with a federal government they would concede to it if a Bill of Rights was attached, to protect the people from potential tyranny.
