In the original story, Bambi"s mother is gunned down, without any warning, by a Hunter. Mother and Child are walking in the forest, very tranquil like a stroll in a park, then out of nowhere- Bang! This occurs near the beginning of the film, really starting out on the wrong boot.

His father was known as The Great Prince of the Forest, and doesn't have any name beyond that. He appears near the beginning of the film watching over Bambi's birth, and again near the middle where he takes in Bambi to raise him (which is expanded in the direct-to-video sequel, where he's voiced by Patrick Stewart). At the end of the film he is seen standing next to the adult Bambi as Faline has his children, like when Bambi was born. He's kept a mysterious character throughout the film, but he's a respected and powerful figure in the forest. In the book it's not outright said that it's his father, but it's heavily hinted at in a scene where the two talk. He's described as the oldest and most powerful stag in the forest and is called "the great prince."
