The "KKK" (Ku Klux Klan) was founded around the end of the Civil War, but rebounded as a right-wing "Christian" white supremacy group from the 1920's to the 1960's. Many members of the Klan are staunchly anti-communist and anti-Semitic as well as anti-black.
The secret factions of the group conducted many killings, including hanging, to intimidate the growing populations of blacks in the rural South and elsewhere. Their activities resulted in criminal and civil penalties against the groups and their members.
The total number of active members is comparatively small (5000 to 7000 in various organizations), but with a larger number of sympathizers in the South and Midwest.
