Memoir of a Geisha is in hte 1930's Japan. Änd is about how these women sell themselves (not sexually) to make money for the teahouse they live in. In my opinion, Mameha was Sayuri's savior. She guided her to escape from a life of constantly being stood on by Hatsumomo. Although, it's revealed in the end that it was the Chairman who had asked for Mameha's wisdom to guide Sayuri out of life as a maid.
Iwasaki, Mineko, ca. 1955- . Iwasaki was, like her older sister, sold to the okiya of a Kyoto geisha house, when she was seven. She went on to become possibly the most famous and influential geisha of her time, and certainly the pre-eminent geisha of Kyoto in the 1960s and '70s. Her story was part of the inspiration for the best-selling 1997 novel, Memoirs of a Geisha, by Arthur Golden, which is being filmed for 1999 release by Steven Spielberg. She now lives in retirement in Kyoto.
In the novel, Memoirs of a Geisha, the main charcter (Sayuri) was forced to leave the Gion district of Kyoto because of World War II. Not only did she and other prominent geisha have to leave, but ordinary civilians left because the war had begun to ruin the city. As usual, the war put a strain on Japan economically! Therefore, the people of Kyoto basically had to start their lives over because the war had took away everything. The business owners i.e., The Chairman and Nobu, lost their businesses and began to depend on the intruding Americans to help them rebuild their lifestyles. Because they depended on the Americans at this point, Sayuri was able to leave "hiding" and return as a geisha. Only, the world had changed tremendously and the real meaning of a geisha had been altered. Since then, the impression of a geisha has been known as a prostitute because of the many women who took advantage of the real geisha being away during the war!
