Starting in the late 1800's steam powered vehicles were going away and in 1896 Henry Ford Developed the first petrol-powered car. However, even the steam powered vehicles such as trains, always had an engine. So yes, all cars since we stepped up from the horse-buggy have had engines; even the old ones.
