The group that set sail on the Mayflower was known as the Pilgrims. They were seeking religious freedom and established the Plymouth Colony in what is now Massachusetts. The Mayflower Compact was created as a governing document for the colony.
The Pilgrims set sail on the Mayflower on September 16, 1620, from Plymouth, England. The 102 passengers along with around 30 crew members arrived in the New World in November, 1620.
After several mishaps and one return to England due to a leaking sister ship (the Speedwell) the Pilgrims boarded the Mayflower to sail to the New World in on September 6, 1620. The Mayflower and the Speedwell were the ships the first Pilgrims sailed on. Both set sail for the New World on August 15, 1620, but were forced back twice due to dangerous leaks on the Speedwell. The Speedwell's passengers regrouped on the Mayflower, and on September 16th, the voyage began, a month behind schedule. The Mayflower landed near what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620.
When the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth they wrote to Mayflower Compact ( it was written on the ship they were on named the Mayflower) as a means to govern their new colony.
