Almost all native American tribes used the bow and arrow for hunting and warfare. The Modoc of the Tule Lake area in southern Oregon and north California were no exception.

The Modoc may have been a very poor tribe but they realised that guns were much more effective than bows traded for muskets, rifles and revolvers when these became available from the White traders and many became expert marksmen with the new weapons.
